    Default Northern Bobwhite in Dallas

Wow, I just had a Bobwhite in my backyard. I mean, I live in the city, not in the outskirts. Couldn't believe my eyes!

Here it is, my little visitor. Helped himself to some cat food, and then walked around the corner and disappeared. Crazy!

While I'm wishing it's a wild bird, I would rather have seen a pair of birds.

Still, no reason not to count it as wild.... unless of course it walks up to your feet and begs

Sounds suspiciously like a pen raised bird.Especially given the fact it ate cat food from a bowl.Very unlikely behavior for a wild quail. But,I guess you never know.

Hey that is big news! I haven't seen one of those in the wild since I was a kid. refidnasb saw one near the Aububon center over the winter, but couldn't get a good photo.

Nature has an ebb and flow. If they could go away, then they can come back too. Maybe we are witnessing their general return to the area!

Probably a number of pen raised Bobwhites in Dallas but I did know of one person raising some in a pen that gave me a surprise when I heard their call. White Rock Lake area just west of Williamson off Ellsworth.

I saw a Bobwhite Quail in Norbuck Park, up near the tennis courts at Peavy and Buckner this winter. I could not get close enough to take a photo, brush was too thick. It was running from one clump of heavy brush to another then would stick to the base of trees, scratching around.

The other quail was in a similar environment, not far from the Audubon Center where the "Eco-Park" facility is located off Simpson Stuart. Got a great look at it, including a call from it.

It would be entirely possible that the quail at Norbuck Park was an escapee of some kind. The quail in Southern Dallas was most likely wild and I believe with other quail in thick privet brush. Same area where I have seen roadrunners in the past.
