View Full Version : Crested Caracara Photos
Let me see if I have posting images figured out.
These are the best photos of the Caracaras I have been able to get so far. (without doing a lot of processing)
http://raincrow.smugmug.com/gallery/2456072/1/128981886 I didn't think so.

Vern, that URL you used is the URL to the page with your four photos of Cacaras. To use that kind of URL, you just paste it into the post without img tags, like this, so people can click on it:
http://raincrow.smugmug.com/gallery/2456072/1/128981886
If you want to embed your photos in the post, it appears you need to click on the link that says "Share photos" under each one of your photos (when you're viewing just the one photo), then click on the word Forums (in big letters near the top) and copy one of those URLs (like the one for the medium sized copy of the photo). Here's a link to the page for one of 'em so you can see what it looks like:
http://raincrow.smugmug.com/gallery/share.mg?how=forum&AlbumID=2456072&Page=1&ImageID=128982444
Then you'd use that URL
(the one that looks like this: http://raincrow.smugmug.com/photos/128982444-M.jpg ) with the img tags fore and aft, the way you used the URL in your post.
Thanks Betsy. I thought I followed theirs and your instructions. Looks like it may have to be 1 photo at a time to embed them?

Oh, definitely -- one photo at a time to embed, with the URL of the photo itself (rather than the URL of any page it appears on) surrounded by the img tags. That allows you to put captions or comments between the photos if you want to.
The technique for getting the URL of a photo itself is different for smugmug than it is for Flickr. Each photo hosting site probably has its own way of giving you the URL of a photo.
Thanks, I'll get the hang of it:)

You got it, Vern! btw, when I answered one photo at a time, I meant one photo's URL inside each pair of img tags. You can put all four photos into one post if you put four pairs of img tags (with a carriage return and a blank line between each one, preferably) in the post with a different photo's URL inside each pair of img tags.
The medium size version on smugmug is a good one to use -- it's bigger than the one you put in but it's not too big for the forum.
Nice photos, btw!
Betsy, thanks for the help and the comment on the photos. Now let me see if I follow instructions:)
2nd of 4....there was a pair of them circling a field and I got this one.

This one was sitting by the hwy. at the edge of town and I got a couple of quick ones. Looks like it's tail is bobbed off, just the position it was in.

The one above, leaving the tree. It turned and flew in front of me...but windshields don't turn out very well.

Excellent, Vern! You've really got the hang of it now.
Caracaras are nifty looking birds, IMO. Thanks for posting photos of 'em.

Vern, where are you finding this bird? It's fantastic. We saw a couple flying with vultures down around Georgetown a few weeks ago. Would love to see one long enough to study and enjoy it. Great pictures!

Great shots Vern. I also would like to know where exactly you are finding them. This is one raptor I really want to photograph. Excellent and sharp captures. Congrats!
Thank you, di.
I run across this bird driving rural roads in northern Van Zandt and Kaufman counties. Also in Rains and Hunt counties, not far from Lake Tawakoni. I have seen them a couple of times in southern Rockwall county.
They are very often in the company of vultures as you saw. There are some ranches in south Texas that cater to photographers that have the Caracaras that probably provide good opportunities to spend more time watching them.
Glad you enjoyed the photos!
Maestro, another place I have seen them a few times is the FM road that leads to Tawakoni State Park. Sometimes I might see them almost every day for a couple of weeks....one place or another. Then I may not see one for two months.
If you see a dark colored bird that resembles a crow flying, you may be looking at a Caracara. If you are in any of the areas, watch for the vultures, especially if they are landing as there may be one in the vicinity.
Also, I believe Connie mentioned a field trip that would be visiting some areas where they have been seen.
