View Full Version : Problem: Cannot Display Mode Thread Repllies By FIFO Linear

I am having a problem displaying the replies to a thread in a first in first out Linear Mode. According to the FAQ's on "What are the various display options" under the General Forum Usage, I should be able to select a linear display mode with the oldest first. However, the only display mode I when choosing Linear Mode displays the newest first. Consequently, I am using the Hybrid Mode.

Have I missed something? I am using the Firefox (Mozilla) browser.

Thanks.

(I noticed that I mispelled "replies" in the subject but cannot change it. TDG)

David, I moved this post to the Users Corner, since it's a technical query about using the forum.

I just tried all the different display modes while logged on as myself, using my I.E. browser, and they all seem to work OK, with posts in FIFO order when I use Linear display mode. But I have a different profile than you do, so....

Will now log on as my test user, Jane Doe, and see if it behaves any differently.

[A bit later]

Test performed. I see what you mean, David, they're being displayed in reverse order for Jane Doe. Checked the regular user profile and it turns out that's the default linear display option. I'll see if I can change that, but if I can, it won't take effect for anyone who's already registered, so here's how a person can change it for their own profile:

1. In the blue bar of links near the top of the page, click on User CP to get to your own personal user profile.

2. Click on the Edit Options link at the left when you get to your profile.

3. Slide down to the Thread Display Options box.

4. In that box, where it says Thread Display Mode, select Linear - Oldest First

5. Slide to the bottom of the page and click on Save Changes.

That should do it for you, David (and anyone else who wants to make this change.)

As for changing the subject of a thread, you can do that if you click Go Advanced after clicking on the Edit button (see my updated post on editing in the Admin's Corner), but I've noticed that it affects only the post itself -- it doesn't have any effect on the subject as it gets displayed in the forum index if it's the first post in a thread. Annoying. I think I'll report that as a bug -- maybe they'll fix it in the next release.

Betsy,

Thank you for the response. It took two times editing the display mode options in my profile to fix it as the first time I did not find the Save option at the bottom. I did not know that the option was in the user "Control Panel" which might be added to the FAQ. I had tried to change it using the "Display Mode" drop down menu on a thread.

Glad you moved the query to the Technical User forum. I had not scrolled down the list of forums and also did not see it on the Bird Talk forum page.

You're welcome, David.

I didn't remember that that option was controlled by a setting in the user's individual profile, either, and it's certainly not intuitively obvious, so I think your suggestion to add a note to the FAQ telling how to change those things was an excellent one and I just did it. Want to have a look at it for me and see if you think the note gives enough info?

btw, I tried to change the default Registered User Profile earlier, but discovered that the linear mode display order isn't included in the set of things I can change.
