To Audubon Dallas,
Please note that the September 13th (08) Ft Worth Audubon / Village Creek Drying Beds fieldtrip info posted on your website is incorrect.
There are actually two groups scheduled. D D Currie will be leading a group of Boy Scouts through the beds earlier in the morning. The scouts are working on their nature merit badges.
Jim Jones and Glenda Keilstrup are the trip leaders for the FWAS fieldtrip.
The FWAS fieldtrip will start at the large pavilion in River Legacy Park (West) between 7:15 and 7:30 AM. We will walk the river trail path towards the west for approximately 2/3 mile, then backtrack to the eastern trail and walk an additional 1/2 mile. The amount of walking we do will depend on how birdy the trail is. Last year at this time we were a few weeks early and unusual migrants were not seen. We amused ourselves by identifying other species like the Two-pedal Yellow Swift and the Striped Nike Wanderer passing us on the trail. This year the Olympics may inspire the reclusive Couch Chipeater or the rarer Bar Stool Hopper to make an apperance.
At around 9:30 to 10 AM, the group will drive over to Village Creek Drying Beds and bird until about noon. D D told me her group should be finished by then.
Directions: Enter River Legacy Park (West) from Green Oaks Blvd. This entrance is approximately 1.25 miles west of the intersection of Green Oaks Blvd and Collins Street / HWY 157 in north Arlington. If coming from Dallas on I30, you may want to use Cooper Street exit off I30 and drive north on Cooper to Green Oaks, turn left and the park entrance is on the right within 200 feet. After entering the park, turn left at the 3-way intersection and drive all of the way to the end. The pavilion will be directly in front of you. Loop around into the parking area. Overflow parking is available back down the road about 200 yards.
The entrance to Village Creek is about 0.6 miles further west on Green Oaks from the park entrance. If the weather remains dry, we will drive into the beds and park where the paved road ends. We can then carpool down along the ponds. Otherwise, we will need to park across Green Oaks from the VCDB entrance at the sporting complex parking lot and walk in.
If there is time, Glenda might set up her blind and we will discuss photography and digiscoping at the end of the trip through the beds.
See you there,
Jim Jones
