View Full Version : Ruby-Crowned Kinglet???

Help. We think we have a Ruby-crowned Kinglet which has been visiting our backyard since Feb 1. But, its red crown is only about 1/8 inche (2 mm) in diameter while pictures in books, i.e. Sibley, shows a much larger crown.

QUESTION: Can Ruby-crowned Kinglets have a small red spot instead of a larger crown which covers 1/3 or more of the top of the head? Or, is it something else?

With the red spot, we are certain that it is not an Orange-Crowned Warbler, two or more of which showed up about 3 weeks ago. We are in south Plano and are tickled that we are attracting these little fellows. But, this latest bird has a wing bar while the Orange-crowned Warbler does not. Other than that and the red spot, both have just about the same coloration. The bird we think is the Kinglet also has a shorter beak. But, I haven't been able to get a good look at its eye.

The behavior of the Ruby-crowned Kinglet is also different. Both like to flit along the ground, but he (she?) also likes to get into our Flame Ancanthus and Cigar Plants with thier dormant/dead branches and leaves on the Cigar Plant. However, while I have seen the Orange-crowned Warbler on the suet feeder, I have not seen the Ruby-crowned Kinglet partaking of the same.

If it weren't for the small size of the red spot, we would be very confident that our latest visitor was a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. So, we are asking if they can have small red spots.

Thanks.
David Griffith

P.S. We are so glad the Bird Chat is back. I have been checking it every once in a while since it was hacked last year. Looking at the date of the oldest thread, I guess it was put back up around Jan 5 though I thought I had checked in mid-January.

Yes, the red spot is very small on their head right now. See my recent photos:

This one, which I took in Dec. 2006, didn't even show the red spot:

The pictures of the males in the field guides have been airbrushed. Sometimes they really do look like that when they're excited, but they usually have a very inconspicuous ruby crown. I'm always so disappointed when I meet the models that posed for the field guide pictures in real life, because they don't look any better than the common bird.

David, not only can a Ruby-crowned Kinglet have a small red spot, sometimes it doesn't show at all. Those feathers are erectile. Raising them to display a larger red patch is an aggressive gesture, so if the bird isn't feeling aggressive or agitated, the red may or may not show at all. If you read the note in the Sibley next to the illustration of the head with the red crest, it says "crest raised" and also shows the gender symbol for male. That illustration shows the crest at maximum extension. I've seen that when two males get into the same small tree in the spring. The females don't have a crest.

If it looks like a Ruby-crowned Kinglet in other respects -- bill size and shape, white eye ring, wingbars, short tail, puffy little body, pale buffy underside, and it's hyperactive, virtually never sitting still, then you can be comfortable with that id.

Regarding Bird Chat, I think I got some posts in there before the DNS was changed to point to the new host site, so some posts predate the restoration of the Birdtalk link -- but I know we had it up and accessible before January 10th, because I left town that day for the LRGV and it was accessible by then. It is nice to have it back -- thanks to the Audubon Board for setting out to restore it.

They are definitely around here. I saw my first one in December. Here is that photo with the small red spot.
