By chance, I happened upon this forum and thought I would register.
I am in Kaufman Co. and actually spend most of my (birding photography) time roaming this area and including Van Zandt, Rains, and Hunt counties. Occassionaly, when I happen to do work in Dallas, I make some stops at Whiterock Lake.
Not sure how much interest many have in Crested Caracaras but I see them fairly often in these areas. Along with a few Bald Eagles, although I have yet to get a nice photo of the Eagles.

Welcome...
Kaufman Co., is about as close we get to resident Crested Caracara. We get the periodic stray and some of have been photographed in Tarrant and Hunt Cos., but the northern population is still largely Kaufman Co. and south.
Thanks for the welcome and the information, jpeter.
I have seen more Caracaras in Van Zandt county, probably because I spend more time there, although my first sighting several years ago was in Kaufman county.
Thanks again.
Vern,
Could you please share some good locations for Crested Caracaras? :p You can either post here or PM me. I would love to photo this bird too.
Thanks.

I need a Caracara for the year. Please post them here. I'm sure there are more than a few people that would like to find them.
lei.....it's hit or miss on the Caracaras. I have seen them often flying across Hwy. 80 west of Wills Point and also north of town on F.M. 751 and F.M. 47.
A good place may be the dam area of Tawakoni. Recently I have seen them off of Hwy. 47 near Holiday Marina (3 flying together) and east of the spillway. This is usually before midmorning. Watch for the vultures as that may be where you see them. I watched one for quite a while on the dam and then saw it turn upside down to reach for a crow that was harassing it.
The biggest problem right there is the distance to the top of the dam from the road. A 400mm lens is just about too short, but with all birds, you never know when you will see one perched in a tree right by the road.
Good luck!

As I posted on the Lake Tawakoni thread, we will have a field trip going there on April 21. Crested Caracaras have been seen at some of the locations this trip will visit.

More eagles are definitely on my list. I do avian photography too (poorly do it, :)) And a Caracara is definitely on my list of birds I want to photograph.
