LOS CABOS JANUARY 2008

We spend the MLK weekend at the twin cities of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Los Cabos have an unusual habitat of hilly desert and ocean. All in our family were eager to see the Gray Whales that congregate in the Sea of Cortes every winter (Dec-Feb) to have their babies. We were fortunate to see about ten of the amazing creatures.
I also had my agenda. We stayed at the Presidente Intercontinental, a great location since the San Jose Estuary is right next door; the hotel had great gourmet food, all inclusive food and drink. The best part is you can bird in the hotel grounds, walk a few feet to the estuary or the beach, and in the evenings is fun to see all the birds returning to the estuary.
I was amazed the cactus and flower beds right next to the pool with the most activity and blasting stereo music was the most favored by the birds. There was a plethora of orioles and Gila woodpeckers in the hotel grounds. The orioles would steal sugar packages from the outdoor café and the woodpeckers would take them away from the orioles.
I will not bore you with a long list of birds common for us, but these were the highlights:

Great Frigatebird
Sora
Cinnamon Teal
Blue Winged Teal
Black Phoebe
Hooded Oriole
Gila Woodpecker
Gilded Flicker
House Finch
Tricolored Heron
American Bittern
Crested Caracara
Costa’s Hummingbird
California Gull
White Ibis
White-faced Ibis
Black-necked Stilt
Common Moorhen
Peregrine Falcon

I’ll try to post some of the decent pictures in the chat side.
