I have been to Lewisville Lake Park twice this week and have seen a rare visitor to Texas, a Snow Bunting.
This cute little bird is about the size of a budgerigar and is hanging out with Killdeer, sometimes in short grass, sometimes along the shoreline.
On arrival today (1/5/07), the first year male Snow Bunting and his companions were located in the soccer(?) field on the right before you get to the Crappie Picnic Area. After about 45 minutes, they flushed and resettled in a green grassy area near Hobie Point. They spent the rest of the morning on the grass between Hobie Point and Sailboard Point, except for a short visit to the shoreline.
It's been in the same area since Keith Lockhart spotted it on December 26th. Birders from all over the state have been coming to see it.
Binoculars are fine, but spotting scopes are great, too, if you got 'em.
Directions to Lewisville Lake Park (be sure to scroll all the way down:
From I-35E, just south of the Lewisville Lake bridge, take the exit for FM407 (Justin Road). FM407 goes to the west. The road at the I-35E/FM407 intersection that goes to the east is Lake Park Road. Follow this east (less than a mile) to a 4-way stop at Mill Street. (There will be a golf course on your right.) Continue east a few feet and turn left on Turtle Trail. This road takes you past some soccer fields and to the gate at the entrance to Lewisville Lake Park.
This is a fee area ($10 per car, I believe). You will get a map when you stop at the ranger station at the entrance.
