August is a transitional month of birding for Arbor Hills like the rest of NCTX. There is post-breeding dispersal and the beginning of fall migration taking place. There is not a peak period to anticipate. Instead, multiple visits over a period of time will yield the most variety of birds. Several herons are expected, but immature Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned can be sporadically found at the willow pond. White-winged Doves are absent most of the year in Arbor Hills, but August is a migration month for them where flocks of from 10 to 60 can be seen. Various types of flycatchers will begin passing through as one here and there later in the month. Expect one or two of Olive-sided and Least Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Eastern Kingbird and Eastern Phoebe. August is the month when Western Kingbirds disappear. Scissor-tails will be present for a few more months. Other birds to expect but cannot be predicted are Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Am. Robin, Orchard Oriole, and Baltimore Oriole. Warblers that move through are Orange-crowned, Yellow, Yellow-throated, Black-and-white, Am. Redstart. and Wilson's. The Painted Buntings are around but silent. They disappear around the third week in August.

Thanks, as always, to Perry Ping for providing the Arbor Hills forecast.
