Many winter resident ducks (dabblers) can be found in our area’s shallow ponds. An especially good location when water levels cooperate is Village Creek Drying Beds off Green Oaks Blvd. in Arlington . Huge numbers of Shovelers, Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintails and other dabblers along with Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Ducks can be present. This is one of the best locations for an occasional Cinnamon Teal in the metro area.

Village Creek is also the editor’s favorite place for sparrowing in winter. Good views of Vesper, White-crowned, Harris’s, and occasionally Le Conte’s are possible in the grassy areas surrounding the ponds. Savannah, Song, Lincoln ’s, and Swamp Sparrows are found throughout the beds as well. Red-tailed Hawks are usually present in this open habitat - overall a great place to spend a winter’s morning birding.
