This is something that perplexes people new to birding. Which of the many field guides should one get? (The real answer is more than one of them! :) )
Found a rather good discussion tonight of the various things to consider when making a choice, which includes a link to a page that compares various currently available guides. One thing they don't explicitly mention is that the Sibley field guides have more illustrations of juvenal plumages than other field guides, which makes them a must own for me.
