I was just at the park looking at the birds around the small lake/pond. There were two little ducklings swimming alone on the water. I knew that wasn't a good thing, but couldn't believe what happened. I watched them swim across the pond towards me, took about 10 minutes. Then as they got near the edge along some tall grass, there was this big splash and in an instant one of the duckings disappeared under water. Gone. No floating feathers, no struggle, nothing. I watched for another 10 minutes or so as the now single duckling swam and called for the other duckling. Never saw any sign of the first one. What is under water that would be big enough to get a duckling?

At WRL, turtles and some of the larger fish take about half of the ducklings, I believe. Seems to be why the ducks need to make so many of them each year.

Maybe a healthy sized Largemouth Bass....OR one of these.

Precisely the reason I held off from going in the pond to try and rescue the last little duckling. I tucked my tail and left so I wouldn't have to witness his impending demise. :( Nature can be cruel.
