I had a pleasant surprise when I looked out at the Hummingbird feeder shortly before 8:00 a.m. this morning and saw a male Ruby-throated at the feeder. It came back three times during the time I watched.

The feeder went up a week ago.....just in case.:)

Vern,

Where are you. We get lots of ruby throats, but usually later in the summer. Last year we had our earliest which was a single in April.

I guess its time to take down the thistle (niger) feeders for the American Goldfinches and put up the hummingbird feeders. I did see one goldfinch uesterday so we will probably leave up one.

I'm north of Terrell (Kaufman Co.), not far south of Hunt Co. line. I noticed another visit this morning at 9:15

I put the feeder up even though it may have seemed early, based on reports of sightings as early as March 15, in Dallas.

The Goldfinches have deserted me I believe. It has been at least a week since I have seen one.

Vern, we are down in Plano, about 1 mile north of the President G.H.W. Bush turnpike. We saw a couple more goldfinches today, but no hummingbirds. I suspect our hummers may nest close by, but we don't get any serious activity until their young have fledged.

David, last year I did not put any feeders out until July, which was probably a little late. However, I got mobbed by several of them while trying to get the first one in the air. They stayed pretty busy until the first week of Nov. and I saw the last one on 14th of Nov. I really didn't realize just how many of them were in the area. A lot of photo opportunities.

This year I thought I would get them out earlier and see when the first ones showed up.

I lived in Plano from 1995-2000......moved back to the country:)
