Hello fellow birders:)

I've just moved to Dallas for the summer from Toronto, and am so excited to see so many species that I don't get at home!

I'm looking for someone (or many people) who could show me a few great birding spots in and around Dallas, to trade birding stories with, and of course to go bird watching with. I don't care if you're amateur or pro, we will have fun either way.

Message me or reply to this thread if you're interested.

Cheers,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Welcome to DFW. There are some interesting places in the area you can bird.
Right now, the Rookery is pretty active with egrets, herons, ibis, etc nesting. There are lots of babies around. I am planning on probably going there on Saturday morning to take some photos...

Also, Village Creek Drying beds and Hagerman NWR in Sherman...

Hi Lisa! See you made it to the DAS forums!

The rookery to which Pedro is referring to is in Dallas, at the UT Southwestern Medical School. Village Creek Drying Beds are in Arlington, where I live, and Hagerman is in Sherman. I know you said you live in Park Cities, I am not sure what is close to there. White Rock Lake is in Dallas. Katy Trail, that you mentioned on Bird Forum, is a very popular trail with runners, bikers, etc. Not sure how much birding you would actually get to do. Trinity River Audubon Center is good from what I hear, haven't been there. In Irving, there is Campion Trail.

I know there are other places in Dallas to bird and I am sure others will chime in about where you can go. I don't know how familiar you are with the area yet. You said you are here for the summer correct? I am not sure when you might be heading back, but if you are going to be here into August, you might want to look at the field trip section of this site and see if the field trip to the Southside Water Treatment Plant appeals to you. If so, you can call or email Dr. Stone to see if there are any spots left for that trip.

I will check my schedule and see if there is date that we can meet some where and do some birding. Will send you a PM.

Do you need permission to go to the drying beds? Or can you just drive through there?

I never knew that was there...and a mile from my in-laws, ha! :)

No permission needed if the gate is open, Renee. If it's too wet and muddy in there they may have it locked so people don't do something annoying, like get stuck and expect the employees to puill them out.
