There is no time limit beyond which you can't edit your own posts -- you can edit them any time after posting them. Fixing an error by editing the post in which the error was made is preferable to correcting the error in a separate reply to that post.
When you want to change a post you've made and you click the lozenge that says Edit, the first thing you're given is the limited capabilities of a Quick Reply Window. If you want more, click Go Advanced to get the fiull editor window. At that point, you're first going to be confronted by a box that gives you the ability to delete the post altogether. Slide down past that to get to the editing window. You'll need to do this to edit the subject of a post (although if it's the post that starts a thread, I notice the change appears on the post itself but not in the forum's index of threads).
The full editing window can be a lot safer to use because the only buttons under the window are Save Changes and Peview Changes. The limited Quick Reply editing window also has the Post Reply button at the left. I can't tell you how many times I've clicked that button after editing a post instead of the Save Changes button, thereby losing all my edits!
By the way, you can click Go Advanced after you've already entered some edits without losing them.
