This forum has a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) editor which works differently from the editor on the old forum. If you're uncomfortable with it you have two options:

change your user profile to use the standard, not wysiwyg editor, or
toggle the Switch Editor Mode icon (the square box on the upper right of the Quick Reply and Advanced Editor windows) when you're making a post or reply.A couple of cautions about the editor(s?) -- I've noticed that the cursor seems to be moved around when you're not expecting it to be (after using one of those icons at the top of the editing window), so keep an eye on where it is. Also, there are two ways to change the appearance of some text:

Set the changes (such as bold or italics, color, font size, etc.) before you type the text. Then you have to toggle that same icon and/or set the other changes back to their default values (assuming you remember what they were) when you've come to the end of the text that you wanted to look that way.
Type all the text first. Then go back and highlight any words you want to change the appearance of and use the tools at the top of the editor window to make the appearance changes. This way is actually less work, I think.
