March hiking and birding in Cedar Ridge Preserve
Cedar Ridge Preserve in far SW Dallas (7171 Mt. Creek Pkwy) offers interesting hiking and a fair number of birds for mid-March, The area has a “hill country” look with junipers, forested valleys and clear streams. This is one of the best (and most scenic) areas in the metroplex for finding (and hearing) the Bewick’s Wren. Trails stay in good shape as long as the weather remains dry. As spring approaches, birding picks up somewhat — be sure to check the areas around the parking lots and educational center for sparrows, forested “canyons” and along the streams for wintering birds, and the pond area and mesquite flats for Southwest specialties (and early arriving flycatchers maybe).
In the past, volunteers have been needed in spring to search for Black-capped Vireos in the preserve. For further information and schedules of activities, be sure to check under Cedar Ridge Preserve on the home page.
