I'm fairly new to birding -- have enjoyed watching birds all my life, but recently started getting a little more serious about seeking them out and making identifications.

I'm currently using a pair of Bushnell Banner 10x42 binos -- originally purchased for general usage, not specifically for birding. I'm thinking of upgrading to a better pair, but I can't afford anything too high-end. I'm wondering what other birders in the area are using and if anyone has any input on the Nikon Monarch ATB line. I'm also curious about the Eagle Optics line carried by Wild Birds Unlimited.

Also, where in town can I find a retailer that carries a variety of better binoculars so I can check them out physically and compare them?

Thank you for any feedback.

there are two Academy Sports and Outdoors stores around Plano that have Bushnells, Nikons, and Leupold optics, others. There is a very large Outdoor World store in Grapevine that might have more choices.

In your price range, porro prisms (dog-leg shaped binoculars) would be better than roof prisms (Nikon Monarchs). But, ultimately it will be your decision to see whats best for you. the Monarchs have had good praise....the Binoculars forum section on BirdForum will give you more advice and information.....http://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=112

Good Luck on your search for quality bins.

I have had great success buying used binoculars from B&H Photo in NYC. Last year I bought Leica 8X42 (retail around $1300) for $899. You have to check back often or call. Here is there link:(http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=catalog.jsp&A=UsedHomePage&Q=1)

Go to several stores and find a pair you like and then search the web for used. Once you get into birding, you will continually upgrade until you spend every last penny you have on good binocs. Take it from an addict!

If you're still in the market for Binoculars, heres an excellent resource for "how they work, what do all the specifics mean" as well as recommendations and informations on available products grouped by price ranges. I found it an excellent way to compare, and I made a purchase from the website, and am very pleased. Eagle Optics Ranger model, 8x42, in the moderate price range.:) http://www.birdwatching.com/optics/binoculars1.html

Thank you for the suggestions and references. I'm hoping to get a pair as an anniversary gift (end of May), so I have some research to do.
